BART Balboa Park Station

Intermodal Station Modernization in San Francisco

Balboa Park Station is a key intermodal hub in southern San Francisco, serving four BART lines and acting as the terminus for three Muni Metro lines. Its strategic role in the city’s transit network made it a priority for modernization and improved passenger experience.

Robin Chiang & Company led the station redesign, focusing on circulation and access between BART and Muni. The project introduced a new Muni off-boarding platform, a headhouse structure, and a pedestrian bridge connecting to a new BART plaza to the station entrance – finally giving the station a long-needed civic presence.

Additional upgrades included new clerestory glazing, lighting, guardrails, pigeon-proofing, and other modernizations. The work required close coordination with both BART and SFMTA to enhance multimodal connectivity and integrate surrounding infrastructure.
