Pier 27 Cruise Ship Terminal Modernization Concepts

This 2008 modernization study for the Port of San Francisco explored cost-effective strategies to revitalize the exterior of the existing Pier 27 Cruise Ship Terminal. Designed by Robin Chiang, the concept envisioned re-skinning the existing structural frame with a contemporary façade to enhance the terminal’s civic image while minimizing reconstruction costs.

The proposed design sought to balance economy and architectural expression—introducing a light, maritime-inspired skin that refreshed the building’s identity along the Embarcadero. The sketches illustrate various façade treatments emphasizing transparency, rhythm, and lightness, establishing a modern yet contextually sensitive face for the working waterfront.
