BART Colma Station
A luminous intermodal gateway uniting four communities through design.

The Colma BART Station, completed in 1995, marked the southern terminus of BART’s first 1.6-mile extension beyond Daly City toward San Francisco International Airport. Designed by Robin Chiang as Design Architect, the $70 million project was completed on time and within budget, earning an Urban Design Award from the American Institute of Architects.

Serving as a vital intermodal hub, the station integrates eleven SamTrans bus lines, three BART tracks, a 900-foot pedestrian bridge, and parking for more than 1,200 vehicles across an open lot and a five-level structure built above a train maintenance yard. Its expansive, light-filled concourse and open-air design create a sense of clarity and movement appropriate for a major transit gateway.

Situated uniquely at the convergence of four jurisdictions: the Town of Colma, the City of Daly City, unincorporated San Mateo County, and the Brentwood neighborhood, the project required extensive coordination and design approval from all governing bodies. The resulting hybrid modern architecture balances visual durability with civic presence, its bright interiors and efficient layout widely praised for setting a new standard for regional transit design.
