During planning, the community of Castro Valley expressed desires for a historical tone in the architecture. The station’s designer, Robin Chiang who was responsible for 100% of the station design, developed a scheme that interpreted the station as a series of remembered histories, lending an attractive familiarity to the subterranean station’s modern volumes. During construction of the station, one quarter of the 1200 car surface parking lot was developed as affordable housing by Bridge Housing. The station has become much-admired by the community and is the setting for open air markets. The station was completed on time and within budget.
