A luxury hotel on the beach of in the Costa Del Sol features 425 suites, two restaurants, a penthouse cafe and night club, atrium lobby and cantilevered pool and sundeck with views of the sea and hills. On the roof, a wind foil (to protect against strong winter gust) doubles as a projection screen for the plaza below. On the seventh floor a cantilevered pool and deck will shade the suspended glass roof on the atrium lobby. In the lobby, cafes, shops and services are designed in “mercado” fashion and encouraged to extend into the plaza and help invigorate small businesses nearly.
The designers Robin Chiang and Habitat of Fuengirola won a design competition in 1998 for this building as one in a series of new projects to recast the image of this neglected resort town, blending sinus organize shapes inspired by the sea with expressive mechanical forms rooted in contemporary building technology.
