This project on San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA) property was seen by the Bayview community as the gateway to the neighborhood at the corner of 3rd Street and Cargo Way. The development features 130 residential units and neighborhood serving retail on the ground floor of a 1.2 acre site.
Residents wanted to have a say in the appearance of the all affordable housing projects with the neighborhood serving retail at its base. Both SFRA and the developer needed community support to overcome historic objections to introducing residential use in an industrial zone.
SFRA recommended Robin Chiang & Company (RCC) as the design architect to work with Van Tilberg Banvard Soderbergh architects of Santa Monica. RCC worked closely with the community as well as SFRA’s planners and architects on the design before the project was deemed incompatible with the area’s zoning in 2004.
