BART Balboa Park Station Modernization (Phase 2)
Balboa Park is a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and SFMTA (MUNI) Metro station complex located south of Balboa Park in southern San Francisco. Along with the four BART lines that pass through the city, three MUNI Metro lines terminate here.
Robin Chiang & Company (RCCo) headed up this modernization project to improve station access and overall circulation for passengers transferring between BART and MUNI lines. The Architectural design included a new MUNI off-boarding platform that leads to a new station head house, a glass canopy covered passenger bridge which crosses into the new BART plaza and station entrance.
The new structure will finally provide Balboa Park Station with a grand entrance and the new reconfigured passenger circulation befits its status as an inter-modal hub.
Other design details include new clerestory glazing, new lighting, new pigeon proofing, new guard rails and other interior and exterior modernization amenities. This project required extensive coordination not only with the owner BART but also with SFMTA for intermodal access and optimization of neighboring components.
