Mission Bay and San Francisco’s Future
MIXED-USE DESIGN IN MISSION BAY NORTH: 2000-2009
Although early proposals for buildings in the project area called for retail use only, Catellus, the real estate development firm that owned the property, and masterplanners SMWM soon changed that to mixed-use residential.
In 1998, in accordance with the approved master plan, housing development began in Mission Bay North with projects such as the Richard Soros Commons at 225 King Street, designed by SMWM and completed in 2002; the Avalon by Fisher Friedman at 255 King Street, shown below; and Glassworks by Brand + Allen Assocs completed in 2003.

The Avalon, Fourth and King Streets: 250 rental units (21 affordable) and 7,800 sq.ft. of retail space
